AI-generated illustration; not a real customer or business.
Your roommate books the train tickets. You owe them ₹3,200. A viral reel says payments above ₹2,000 will be charged. Should you send two smaller payments?
For this hypothetical personal reimbursement, there is no need to split it to avoid the announced merchant fee. The Finance Ministry says P2P transfers remain free regardless of amount. Your bank's transfer limits still apply.
Follow the purpose, not just the number
Consider three invented student situations:
| Payment | What to check |
|---|---|
| A parent sends ₹8,000 for monthly expenses | A genuine personal transfer remains outside merchant MDR |
| You reimburse a friend ₹3,200 | A personal reimbursement is different from paying a business |
| You buy a ₹3,200 backpack from a shop | Recipient category matters to the merchant; MDR is not your surcharge |
Receiving money into a personal account does not automatically make every receipt personal in substance. Selling designs, tutoring or taking regular customer orders needs the correct business setup. See the freelancer guide before treating client receipts like gifts.
What happens at a shop?
The announced framework begins on 15/10/2026. An eligible ordinary merchant payment above ₹2,000 can carry merchant MDR; qualifying small merchants and designated sectors have different treatment. The official FAQ also prohibits passing MDR to customers.
So the useful question at checkout is “Why is this extra amount on my bill?” rather than “Which app makes me avoid the rule?” Keep the item price separate from a claimed UPI surcharge. Use the extra-charge checklist if the explanation is unclear.
A 30-second payment habit
Before confirming, read the recipient name, the amount and the selected funding source. A linked credit card is not the same as your bank balance. Afterward, check the transaction status before repeating a payment because someone says it failed.
Never enter a UPI PIN merely to receive money. Google Pay's fraud guidance explains this receiving-money distinction. Refund or “fee waiver” messages do not change it.
Knowing these differences is more useful than being embarrassed about a small payment or a first earning. Money skills grow through everyday decisions; a student's job title does not determine how seriously their money deserves to be treated.
