Check your college attendance rules before agreeing to regular work hours. A friend saying “we only need 75%” does not tell you which regulation applies, how attendance is calculated, or whether practicals and other requirements work differently.
For adult students considering paid work, this is a document check first and a timetable decision second.
Find the rule with your name on it
Record your institution, programme, admission year and applicable regulation. University departments, affiliated colleges and autonomous institutions may use different documents. Find the rule through your college's official academic office or website, and ask whether amendments apply.
Keep the PDF or official link, not just a forwarded screenshot of one paragraph. The surrounding definitions can change what a percentage means.
Read the unit of calculation
As one specific example, Anna University's B.E./B.Tech. University Departments Regulations 2023, Revision 1 (2024), clause 11.1, requires 75% attendance in each course for the relevant end-semester examination. Clause 11.6 addresses prior approval for activities considered on duty.
This is an example of a scoped rule, not a statement that every Chennai college uses it. Do not assume ordinary paid work counts as an approved on-duty activity. Ask your own academic office directly and keep the answer.
A course-wise rule means a strong overall figure may not answer the question for an individual course. Write down the actual calculation used by your institution before estimating your position.
Use a verification card
This is an original question list to take to your adviser:
- Which regulation and amendment apply to my batch?
- Is attendance assessed per course, overall, or another way?
- Do practicals, projects or mandatory activities have separate requirements?
- Which records can I check, and how do I report an error?
- What approvals are needed before an absence or college activity?
An attendance margin is not a plan to miss every class up to the limit. Timetables change, and an unexpected absence may be outside your control.
Offer only the hours left after that check
For workers aged 18+, prepare availability around classes and travel, then use the exam-season work guide when assessment deadlines tighten the week.
Suggested message to a prospective workplace: “I am available outside these fixed college hours. I cannot confirm work that overlaps them. I will tell you in advance when my examination timetable is issued.”
Keep the verified rule beside your calendar, where you can check it before accepting the next recurring commitment.
