A day off can remain a day off. You do not have to turn it into a course, a workout challenge, a cleaning marathon and a plan for earning more next week.
For adult students combining classes and paid work, an unassigned day may still contain household or caring responsibilities. The aim is to recognise those real constraints without filling every remaining space by habit.
Remove one demand rather than adding a routine
The ILO's working-time report considers how schedules and differences between actual and preferred hours relate to work-life balance. It is not a formula for the perfect rest day.
Try this original three-line card:

I am leaving this time unassigned: ___
Keep the first line specific. Something needing attention today is different from a long list of things you would like to have finished eventually. If everything feels urgent, choose one person to ask about a deadline or one task whose scope can be reduced.

Tell people what they need to know
Suggested message: “I am unavailable today. I can respond to this tomorrow after class.” Use it where you have that flexibility, and handle an existing commitment through its actual process rather than silently disappearing.
For workers aged 18+, declining a new optional shift does not require a more impressive activity in its place. You may want company, a familiar film or nothing planned at all.
Put the card away once the necessary decision is made. You do not owe anyone an end-of-day report demonstrating that you used the break well.
