This is a letter to one reader: a second- or third-year student at Vel Tech, SA Engineering College or Panimalar, classes done by 4, money done by the 20th of the month. Part-time work within reach of your campus exists, most of it in Avadi town's retail and market strips, and entry-level Chennai shifts sit around ₹100-₹160 per hour on public job boards in 2026. If your campus is Vel Tech
You are the closest of the three, and the awkwardest. Vel Tech sits on Vel Tech Road off the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road, past Paruthipattu, and while Avadi's shopping stretch is only a share-auto ride down CTH Road, that ride swells badly at college closing time. If your last hour ends at 3.40, you can be in Avadi town by 4.30 on a normal day and make a 5 pm retail start. If you have a lab till 4.45, weekday evenings are gone; do not book them and then cancel, because cancellations follow you.
If you are a Vel Tech hosteller, the calculation flips entirely. Weekday evenings collide with gate timings, but your Saturdays and Sundays are wide open and stores in Avadi staff up exactly then. If you are at SA Engineering College
You have the smoothest corridor of the three. The campus sits off the Poonamallee-Avadi Main Road near Thiruverkadu, and buses run that corridor all day, so Avadi town is a single direct ride without touching CTH Road traffic. Day scholars living on the Avadi side of campus are the single best-placed group in this whole letter: college, home and shift all sit on one line.
If your classes end at 4 and you live toward Avadi, the 5 to 9 pm window at supermarkets, brand stores and counters is genuinely yours on weekdays. If you live toward Poonamallee instead, treat yourself like a Panimalar student and read the next section. If Panimalar is your college
Distance is your real constraint, so plan around it rather than pretending it away. Panimalar sits on Bangalore Trunk Road at Varadharajapuram, past Poonamallee, the farthest of the three campuses from Avadi town. A weekday evening shift means riding the Poonamallee-Avadi stretch after a full college day and coming back in the dark. Some students do it. Most should not start there.
Start with weekends instead. A Saturday or Sunday day shift gives you a relaxed morning ride in, a full shift, and daylight home. Weekend demand in retail is the strongest of the week anyway, so you are not settling for leftovers; you are taking the best slots. Sambalam-wise, the weekend day shift and the weekday evening shift pay from the same band. You lose nothing by choosing the window that fits your life.
Hosteller or day scholar: the question that decides your calendar
Whether you stay in the hostel matters more than which college you attend. A day scholar with a two-wheeler and a house in Avadi can work a Tuesday evening without telling anyone. A hosteller cannot, because almost every engineering hostel around Avadi and Poonamallee closes its gates between 8 and 9 pm, and the evening retail rush runs right up against 9. So the split is plain: weekday evenings belong to Avadi-side day scholars, weekend and morning shifts belong to hostellers, and both groups should go quiet in the two weeks before semester exams, book nothing, and come back after. An engineering timetable also hides usable slots people forget: the odd free Saturday when your department has no lab, study holidays that are really only half study, and the long December-January stretch when the town is at its busiest with festival crowds and your campus is shut.

Two warnings from the ground. First, if any "placement consultancy" near a college gate or the bus terminus asks for a registration fee, that is not a job; in real work the money moves toward you, never from you. Not a safety issue. Just something we learned the slow way.
