What do I need before I can book?
Two things: a finished signup and a verified account. Signup is free and takes about a minute. You enter your phone number, get an OTP, and you're in. Worker accounts have no joining fee. If a friend sent you a referral code, that is the step where it goes — what a referral code actually does, and what the beta has not finalised yet is worth reading before you assume a reward is attached to it.
You also need to be 18 or older and in India. Hustlers work as independent contractors, not as Hustl employees, so there is no salary, no roster obligation and no employee benefits attached to a shift.
After signup you submit your identity documents. Every Hustl account and its documents are verified manually by the Hustl team — a person looks at what you uploaded before your account goes live. That is a real operating control, and it is also why clearance moves with the queue rather than flipping the moment you upload.
One more thing worth carrying with you beyond Hustl. If an employer asks you to pay money to be given a job, that is a serious warning sign. Independent-partner platforms are a different case: some publish official onboarding, kit, deposit or rental costs up front, and those are not automatically fraud. What matters is whether the cost is disclosed in the platform's own official channel, what exactly it buys, whether it is refundable, and who receives the money. Being asked to pay an individual recruiter, into a personal account, or outside the official flow is a red flag every time.
How do I pick a good first shift?
Open the list and look for something close to home and simple. Your first shift is not the time to take a tricky role 18 km away. A short retail-floor slot, counter help, or an event hand within a comfortable commute beats anything that needs special skills.
Run these three filters in your head as you scan:
- Distance. Pick something you can reach without stress. Closer means less travel cost and no chance of running late.
- Timing. Match it to your real day. If you're juggling classes, grab a shift that sits cleanly inside a free block.
- Task clarity. Read the task list. If you understand exactly what's asked, that's your shift.
Entry-level part-time pay in Chennai varies a lot by role, employer, shift length and season, so there is no single hourly number worth quoting at you. Judge the actual listing. Each Hustl shift lists its own pay before you book, so you see that specific number rather than an average.
Why are some shifts shown first?
Because the list reflects what Partners have posted near you, not some hidden algorithm deciding your fate. Read every open shift rather than trusting the order — pay, distance and timing are all visible on the listing itself, and the one at the top is not automatically the one that fits your day best.
Hustl's ratings, ranks and badges are part of the product, and the line we use internally is "proof, not promises": your record is meant to do the talking. Being straight about it, though — we are early enough that we are not going to tell you a badge will get you more work when we do not yet have the data to show that it does. What we can say plainly is the reverse: showing up on time and checking in and out properly leaves a clean record, and a no-show leaves a bad one.
How do I book and confirm?
Booking is the easy part. The order goes like this:
- Tap the shift to open the full details: role, pay, exact timing, location, and the task list.
- Read the tasks once more. Confirm the timing fits and you can reach the spot.
- Tap book to confirm. You're locked in for that slot, and the Partner sees that the slot is taken.
That's it. Spots are capped at the number the Partner posted, so a shift that suits you can be gone by the time you come back to it.

What do I do on the day?
Leave early and reach the spot a few minutes before your slot. Once you arrive, you check in yourself by scanning the rotating QR code the Partner shows you. That QR is what authorises the check-in. If your phone supplies location at that moment, the system also records proximity evidence — accuracy and distance from the shift location — alongside the timestamp. That location capture is corroborating evidence, not the thing that approves your check-in, and it is not always available.
Then run the shift the way the task list described. Be polite, follow the instructions, and ask the on-site contact if anything is unclear. When the shift ends, you check out using the Partner's rotating six-digit OTP — the Partner reads you the code, you enter it, and that is the Partner's sign-off on your attendance. Checkout may also record GPS or photo evidence.
There are separate fallback paths: a Partner can record a check-in or completion on your behalf, and an admin can record a manual exception. Those are logged distinctly from the QR and OTP paths, because they carry different evidence. Nobody should describe them as the same thing.
One small practical thing: keep your phone charged. You need it for the QR scan and the checkout code.
How soon do I get paid?
There's no payday to wait for. Finish your shift, submit your rating, and get paid to your linked UPI ID within minutes.* The rating is part of the trigger, not an optional extra — the payout is released once the shift is complete and your rating is in, so don't close the app before you tap through it.
The sequence is the part you can rely on: you see the pay before you book, you do the work, you check out with the Partner's OTP, you rate the shift, and that amount goes to the UPI ID linked to your account. Make sure that UPI ID is correct and active, because a wrong or inactive one will hold the transfer up.
The same straightness applies in both directions. During the beta, verified Partners post their shifts using free beta credits, and paid partner billing is not live yet. You keep the listed wage. There is no retainer or hidden deduction quietly shrinking your take.
How do I get picked for more shifts?
Your record is what you have to work with. After a clean shift you have attendance evidence attached to your account: the timestamps, the QR check-in, the checkout OTP, any location captured, and the Partner's review. That is a more useful thing to show than nothing at all.
Be clear about what that evidence is and isn't. It shows that you turned up and completed the shift as recorded. It is not a statement that a business is vetted beyond our own document check, and it is not a safety guarantee. And realistically, more shifts depend mostly on what Partners post near you — not on a score quietly unlocking work in the background.
Gig and platform work in India has been growing, and short flexible shifts do fit around a college timetable well. A few habits that help:
- Check back through the day, since Partners post shifts as they need them.
- Keep the app's location permission set the way you're comfortable with; location is captured at check-in when available.
