Before you accept an evening shift in Chennai, work out one number: the gap between when you will actually walk out of the venue and when the last service on your actual route actually goes. If that gap is negative, you were not offered an evening shift. You were offered an evening shift plus a cab fare, and the fare comes out of the same pay.
The test takes about five minutes on two official websites. Both change. Everything on this page was read from the operators' own pages in early August 2026, and a timetable that was correct last month is not evidence about tonight, so check it again on the day you are asked.
Which evening jobs exist, and who hires for them, is a separate question that lives on our evening and night part-time jobs guide. This page answers only whether the shift in front of you is reachable and what getting home costs. Written for readers aged 18 and over, in Chennai and Tamil Nadu.
Your leaving time is later than the shift end time
Almost everybody who gets stranded makes the same mistake. They compare the shift's stated end time against the last service, decide it is fine, and then discover that the stated end time was never the leaving time.
Three things sit in between.
Closing duties. Cash counting, shutters, restocking, sweeping, waiting for a supervisor to sign off. Nobody hands you the keys at 22:00 sharp.
The walk. Venue door to stop or station entrance, at night, possibly with a bag. Measure it once in daylight and write it down, because the estimate in your head is optimistic.
The wait you did not budget. Arrive two minutes after a service leaves with the next one thirty minutes away, and that thirty minutes is yours, not the operator's.
Add all three to the stated end time. That is your leaving time, and everything below compares against it rather than against the number in the ad.
Reading the end time in the advertisement
An advertised end time is a scheduling statement about the venue, not a promise about when you personally get to leave. Whatever wording you are looking at, the same four questions turn it into something you can plan around, and the answers vary from employer to employer, so ask them every time rather than assuming last month's answer carries over.
- Is the stated end time when the venue closes to customers, or when staff leave? These are different times in almost every retail and food business, and only one of them is yours.
- Are closing duties inside or outside the stated end time? Ask it in exactly those words. A vague answer is itself an answer.
- Who releases you, and are they on site until then? If you need a supervisor's sign-off and the supervisor leaves at a different hour, your exit time is attached to theirs.
- Does the listing say "flexible timing", "may extend", or "as per business requirement"? That is an open-ended end time, and an open-ended end time cannot be tested against a fixed last service. Ask for the ceiling before you agree.
Anything a listing says about a drop, a transport allowance or a cab reimbursement is worth the same treatment: ask whether it applies to your shift, to your area, and on the night in question, or only in principle. Get every answer in the same written thread the shift was offered in, so that both of you are working from the same sentence later.
Where the official timings actually live
Two operators publish what you need, and each page answers a narrower question than people assume. Read the right-hand column before you rely on anything.
| What you need | Official page | What it gives you | What it does not give you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro first and last trains | CMRL Time Table and its first and last train timings PDF | Departure times from terminal stations by corridor, with separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday/holiday tables, plus frequency bands | Your own station's last-train time, and anything about tonight's running |
| A bus route's schedule | MTC Bus Timings | The latest scheduled timings for a specific route number | Whether that service actually ran tonight |
| Which routes pass your stop | MTC stage-wise info | Routes passing a named stage, from a list of over 3,100 stages including AVADI, AVADI B.T, VELACHERY MRTS and VELACHERY VIJAYA NAGAR | Timings, which you then look up route by route |
| Where a route goes | MTC route-wise info | The stage sequence for a route number | Fares |
| Night bus services | MTC Night Service Information | The MTC night services schedule | Daytime fares, because night services are a separate tariff |
| What the ride costs | MTC Fare List and the CMRL Fare Table | Stage-wise bus fares by service class, and the metro fare table | Your exact stage count, which you get from the stage sequence |
| Last mile from a metro station | CMRL Metro Connect feeder service | Which feeder minibus routes connect which metro stations, and how many minibuses run each | Operating hours, which that page did not publish when we read it in early August 2026 |
| Where the bus is right now | MTC live tracking | Live positions, linked from the MTC site as Live Bus Track | A plan for next Saturday |
If something goes wrong on the night, MTC publishes a customer care number of +91-9445030516 and a toll free 149 on its home page, and CMRL publishes a 24/7 helpline of 1860-425-1515 and a women's helpline of 155370 on its contact page. Save the one that matches your route before the shift, not during it.
There is a third operator, and it catches people out. Chennai's suburban rail lines and the Chennai Beach to Velachery MRTS are run by Southern Railway, not by CMRL or MTC, so nothing on either of the pages above tells you when your last suburban or MRTS train goes. If your route home finishes on one of those legs, as it does for much of the Chromepet and Pallavaram corridor, where the GST Road and the suburban line run together and the metro does not stop at all, treat it as a separate check with stricter rules: take the time from the railway's own enquiry service or from the printed board at your own station, note the day of the week it applies to, and write down the date you read it. Do not take a suburban time from a timetable aggregator, a third-party transit app or a screenshot someone forwarded, because those are copies with nobody promising to update them, and this is the single number you cannot afford to have wrong at 23:10. Do that check in daylight, on a day you are not in a hurry.
The 23:00 you see is a terminal departure
Chennai Metro published a service window of 05:00hrs to 23:00hrs on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays/holidays alike in its first and last train timings PDF, linked from a Time Table page last updated on 2 July 2026.
Read the column headings carefully, because they say "Departure Time of Last train" and they are listed against terminals. On weekdays the last Blue Line train left the Airport at 23:00 and Wimco Nagar Depot at 23:00. On the Green Line, the last train left Chennai Central at 23:00 and St. Thomas Mount at 23:00. The inter-corridor service ran slightly later, leaving Chennai Central at 23:17 and the Airport at 23:08.
That is a departure from the end of the line. Your station sits somewhere along it, so the train reaches you afterwards, by an amount the PDF does not tell you. Do not treat 23:00 as your platform's cut-off.
Frequency in the last hour matters more than people expect. Between 22:00 and 23:00 the PDF gives the Blue Line a service every 15 minutes, while the inter-corridor and Green Line services drop to every 30 minutes. A missed connection at 22:35 on a 30 minute headway is not a small slip.
A weekend detail sits in the notes too. The PDF states that short loop services are not operated on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays, and that the 3 minute peak frequency between Washermenpet and Alandur depends on those short loops running. If your shift falls on a Saturday, the stretch you rode on Wednesday is not the stretch you are riding tonight.
Night buses are on a different tariff
This is the part that quietly eats the pay. MTC does not charge night services at the ordinary fare. Its Fare List, shown as stage-wise fare for one adult and stated to be effective from 29-01-2018 under G.O. (Ms.) No. 48 dated 28.01.2018, carries a separate Night services table.
On that table, stage 1 is ₹11.00 and stage 30 is ₹49.00. The ordinary services table for the same stages is ₹5.00 and ₹24.00. So on the published tariff, the same distance on a night service is roughly double the ordinary fare at both ends of the stage range.
Double a small number is still small on one trip. Multiply it by five or six shifts and it stops being noise, which is part of why our guide to fitting part-time work around an office day suggests planning for two or three weeknights rather than five. Count the two legs separately, because your morning journey and your night journey may not be on the same tariff at all.
CMRL publishes its own rates as a 20% discounted fare, last updated on 22/02/2021, on a page last updated on 24 September 2025. Fares change by order, not by rumour, so read the operator's page rather than a screenshot someone forwarded.
The route worksheet
Fill this in once per venue, not once per job board. It stays valid until the venue, the shift timing or the timetable changes.
- Venue and exact locality. Not "Velachery", but the street or the landmark. Two addresses in one neighbourhood can sit on different routes.
- Stated shift end time. Copy it from the offer, in writing.
- Closing buffer. Ask directly: are closing duties inside or outside the stated end time? Get the answer in the same chat thread the shift was offered in.
- Walk time, venue door to stop or station. Measured, not guessed.
- Your real leaving time. Field 2 plus field 3 plus field 4.
- Route and stage, or line and station. Find your stop in MTC's stage list, then look up each route in MTC Bus Timings. For metro, use the terminal timings PDF, remembering it is terminal-based.
- Last service on that route, on that day of the week. Weekday, Saturday and Sunday figures differ. Write which day you checked.
- The gap. Field 7 minus field 5. Under 20 minutes and you are relying on nothing going wrong.
- Fallback transport and its cost tonight. Auto, cab or shared ride, priced at the hour you would actually book it.
- Fallback cost as a share of the shift pay. Field 9 divided by what the shift pays you. This is the number that decides most of these.
- One person who knows your plan, and the cancellation option. Who you told, and what happens if you say no on the day.
- Checked on. Write the date beside the worksheet. A transit check has a shelf life.
A hypothetical worked example. The times below are invented to show the arithmetic. They are not observed Chennai listing data, not a real shift, and not a claim about any employer. Substitute your own inputs.
The offer says the shift ends at 22:00. You ask about closing duties and are told they run about 20 minutes past, which puts you out of the door at 22:20. The walk takes 9 minutes, so your real leaving time is 22:29. Your route's last service is timetabled at 22:45. Gap: 16 minutes, which is inside your control only if nothing runs late.
Then the money. Price an auto home at that hour, divide by the shift pay, and ask yourself how often you expect to need it. If the fallback eats a fifth of the pay one night in three, you are not being paid what the offer says.
When your area is off the metro map, the last mile is its own timetable
The metro does not go everywhere, and the two areas we know best show why the last mile needs its own line in the worksheet.
Velachery is reached from the metro network by feeder, not by a metro station of its own. CMRL's Metro Connect feeder service page, last updated on 24 November 2024, lists route S83 from Arignar Anna Alandur Metro via Adambakkam Police Station, Velachery MRTS and Vijayanagar B.S. to Gurunanak College, Velachery, with 2 minibuses, and route S97 from Guindy Metro to Velachery Vijayanagar B.S., also with 2 minibuses. Read the S97 via-list once and it is basically somebody's walking directions written down: Chellamal College, Guindy racecourse, Maduvankarai, Five Furlong Road, Phoenix Mall, Guru Nanak College, Dhandeesvarar kovil, Velachery. Useful, slightly charming, and completely silent on when the last one leaves.
That silence is the problem. Two minibuses is a small operation, and the page publishes the route and the count, not the hours. Plan metro to Alandur and then a feeder, and you have one timetable you can read and one you cannot, and the one you cannot read is the leg that gets you to your door. There are two honest ways to close that gap, and both are worth doing before you accept anything: ask CMRL's 24/7 helpline on 1860-425-1515 for the last departure on your feeder route and write down the answer with the date you were told it, and ride the leg once in daylight so you can ask the driver directly. Until you have that number, treat the feeder as unavailable after dark and price the alternative into field 9.
Avadi is a different shape. It appears in MTC's stage list as AVADI, AVADI B.T and AVADI CIRCLE, so buses are the answer there, and no Metro Connect route in CMRL's published list serves it. Local role pictures for both areas sit on our Avadi part-time jobs page and Velachery part-time jobs page, and the corridor toward Guindy and Taramani is covered in our Velachery, Guindy and Taramani student jobs guide. Taramani has its own feeder in CMRL's list, route S98 from Little Mount Metro via Saidapet Court, Anna University, Madhya Kailash and Tidel Park.
North Chennai has the same problem in a slower-burning form. Perambur, Perambur Barracks, Kolathur Junction, Retteri Junction and Villivakkam all appear as station names on CMRL's Phase II map, and CMRL lists those corridors as still under progress, so a name on that map cannot carry you home tonight. Anyone weighing an evening shift in the Perambur and Kolathur belt is running this same last-service test against buses and suburban rail, not against the metro timings above.
On the metro itself, CMRL states that it provides a women-only coach, CCTV cameras, station security staff and a martial-arts-trained "Pink Squad", and publishes a women's helpline on 155370. Those are facilities the operator says it provides, not a guarantee about any particular journey, and they say nothing about the walk at either end.
What Hustl can and cannot tell you here
Hustl publishes this article, so treat the following as a disclosure rather than a recommendation.
Hustl is live in public beta in Chennai, with activity concentrated in Avadi and Velachery. Signup is open to anyone 18 or over in India, and our team verifies every account and its documents manually before it goes live. Businesses register the same way, and once verified they post real shifts using free beta credits. Availability varies, so this page makes no claim that an evening or late shift is open in any area tonight, and none of the work discussed above is presented as currently listed on Hustl.
Two mechanics touch field 5 of the worksheet directly.
Check-out is not automatic. A Hustler checks out by entering the Partner's rotating six-digit OTP, and check-in works the other way round, with the Hustler scanning the Partner's rotating QR code and location recorded when the phone supplies it. Partner and admin overrides exist and are recorded separately. At 22:20 that means your leaving time depends on somebody at the venue being available to hand over the code, so fold it into field 3 and ask in advance who holds the code on the night.
The money moves faster than the bus does. Once the shift is complete and you submit your shift rating, your pay goes to your linked UPI ID within minutes.* That changes field 9 rather than field 8: if your fallback is an auto home, the fare for it is not sitting behind a payday at the end of the month. It is not a reason to accept a shift you cannot get home from. It is one less thing to borrow for.
Hustl is a technology marketplace and an intermediary; Hustlers are independent contractors, aged 18 and over, in India. The Hustler and Partner web apps at app.hustl.today and partner.hustl.today are the current surfaces, and native iOS and Android apps arrive with our first stable release. Hustl does not guarantee earnings, hours, shifts or insurance, and nothing on this page is a claim about the safety of any route, area or hour.
Two replies that are not "yes"
If the gap in field 8 comes out thin or negative, you have two moves left, and both are ordinary business conversation.
Renegotiate the clock. Ask for a finish 30 minutes earlier, a start 30 minutes later, or closing duties inside the stated end time. Ask in the same written thread. A venue that genuinely needs the hours will tell you which of the three it can move; a venue that goes vague on all three has told you something too.
Decline, and say why. "The last service on my route goes at 22:45 and I would be leaving at 22:50" is a clean factual reason that costs you nothing and often gets you offered the earlier slot instead. Before you send it, decide who knows your plan that night and what you are willing to share about your location, which is the subject of our guide to what to share on a shift.
Then run the test again for the next offer, because the answer belongs to the route and the day, not to the job. If you want to see what is actually listed near Avadi or Velachery, you can make a free account at app.hustl.today and look; what is open varies by area and by week, so check rather than assume. If you run a business that needs a few hours of help, register at partner.hustl.today.
* Hustl is in public beta and the payment gateway is not integrated yet, so each payout is released by our team rather than automatically. It is usually under 2 minutes, typically 2-5 minutes, and no more than 10 minutes after you complete your shift and submit your rating.
