Entry-level part-time pay in Chennai varies by role, employer and shift length, so the honest starting point is the pay written on the listing in front of you, not a headline hourly band. What is more predictable is where the shifts are. If your classes are in Guindy or Taramani, most of the entry-level work sits in Velachery, somewhere between ten and thirty minutes from your campus gate depending on whether you ride the MRTS or take a bus down Velachery Main Road. This post is the travel-time and timing math for that exact triangle: Anna University and IIT Madras on the Guindy side, the Taramani institutional belt in the middle, and the two Velachery malls where the entry-level volume actually is.
One disclosure before the routes. Two malls, about a kilometre apart, carry most of the student volume
Phoenix MarketCity and The Grand Mall both sit on the Velachery Main Road stretch, close enough that you can walk between them if the sun is kind. Between them they hold the densest cluster of entry-level work in the whole triangle: retail floor help in the brand stores, stockroom and restocking runs before opening hours, food-court counters, and promo tables that appear during sale weekends and vanish by Monday. You do not need experience for most of these roles. You need to show up on time, which is why the rest of this post is about commutes.

Two stops: the Taramani commute is the shortest in the triangle
From Taramani MRTS station to Velachery is two stops, Perungudi in between, and the line terminates at Velachery. The ride itself is short — under ten minutes in normal running. Students at the University of Madras Taramani campus, NIFT, or anyone working out of the Tidel Park and IIT Madras Research Park belt are closer to the Velachery malls than most Velachery residents stuck in Main Road traffic.
Two practical notes the route map will not tell you. First, MRTS trains are not metro-frequent; the gap between services can be long enough to kill your buffer, so check the current timetable before a shift, not at the platform. Second, going home is usually the easy direction: your return train starts at Velachery, the terminus, so it tends to arrive empty and you can often sit the whole way. After a six-hour standing shift, that seat matters more than it sounds.
The station stretch itself floods badly in the November rains. Nothing to do with shifts. Just something you learn fast in this part of the city.
The Guindy side runs on buses and two-wheelers, not trains
Neither Anna University's Guindy campus nor IIT Madras sits on the Velachery leg of the MRTS in a way that helps for this particular trip, so the commute is Gandhi Mandapam Road onto Velachery Main Road. Budget 20 to 30 minutes by bus in evening traffic, closer to 15 on a two-wheeler. IIT students have the shortest hop of all: the institute's Velachery gate opens onto the right side of the city, and a share auto covers the remaining stretch to Phoenix in a few minutes when the gate timings cooperate.
The math changes your shift choice. A Taramani student can accept a 5 pm start with a 4.30 departure. A Guindy student saying yes to the same shift should be out of campus by 4.10, or pick listings with a 5.30 or 6 pm start instead. The pay stated on the listing does not move for the later start; the traffic does.
Earliest realistic start times, campus by campus
Every campus in the triangle has a different answer to "can I make a 5 pm shift", and the difference is the commute, not the willingness. These timings assume you leave within about fifteen minutes of your last class and are headed for the Velachery Main Road mall stretch on a normal weekday evening.

Treat the right-hand column as planning guidance, not gospel. One rained-out evening or one late lab rewrites it, and cancelling a booked shift costs you more reputation than never booking it did.
A class-till-4 day fits the 4-to-9 retail window almost exactly
Mall retail and food-court demand in Velachery peaks from late afternoon to closing, because that is when the crowd arrives. If your last class ends at 4, the 5-to-9 or 6-to-10 shift is the one built for you. In our own beta conversations with shops in this zone, evening slots came up most often as the hard ones to cover — that is an anecdote from a small number of businesses, not a measured pattern. What does that add up to per month? Depends entirely on how many evenings you give it, and we would rather you do the multiplication with your own timetable than trust a promise. Weekends are the surge, and the food courts feel it first
Saturday and Sunday flip the picture. Footfall at both malls rises sharply, food-court counters queue up, and where longer weekend shifts are offered, a 6-to-8-hour Saturday pays more in total than a short weekday one simply because it is longer. Sale weekends and festival run-ups tend to stack promo and crowd-support roles on top.
Our own June pilot in this zone was small enough that it proves nothing about weekend demand. The dated extract we publish covers 14-21 June 2026 and records four real users and three completed shifts, with no payouts recorded in that window — a sample far too small to describe a market, and a historical record from before the public beta rather than a picture of today. Be careful with money that flows the wrong way. A legitimate employer does not charge you for access to a job. Some independent platform or franchise models do publish genuine onboarding, kit, deposit or commission terms, so an upfront cost is a reason to check carefully rather than automatic proof of a scam: ask for the exact term in writing, who receives the money, whether it is refundable, and whether it is paid through the company's official channel. A consultancy near the bus terminus asking for a cash registration fee in a personal account before it will even show you a role is failing every one of those checks.
If you study anywhere in this triangle, the practical move is small: check the app on a Thursday to see whether anything is posted for the weekend in your part of Velachery, and judge the travel time against your own timetable. Availability varies, so some evenings there will be nothing near you.
