People keep asking us a fair question: is Hustl real, or is it just a landing page and a promise? So here's the honest answer, told as a story. In June 2026 we ran Hustl's very first beta shifts, shop-floor help at a clothing retail store, first in Avadi and then in Velachery. I'm Shoaib, and I ran those shifts myself, on the ground, so everything below is first-hand. Hustl is now live in public beta in Chennai — open signups, real shifts, real pay. We're still not going to dress it up with numbers we can't back, and where our own records disagree with the story we'd like to tell, we'll show you the records.
Is Hustl real, and what were the first shifts?
Yes, Hustl is real and live in public beta, and the first shifts were genuine shop-floor helper roles at a clothing retail store, run in Avadi and then in Velachery in June 2026. We haven't named the store here because we don't hold written permission to use its brand in our marketing, and we're not going to borrow someone else's name for credibility.
Two things are true at once, and it matters that we keep them apart.
What our dated pre-launch extract records. We hold one dated snapshot of the pre-launch pilot, covering 14-21 June 2026. For that sample it records 4 real users, 1 partner, 3 completed shifts, zero payouts, and a zero GPS check-in share. That is a tiny sample from an early window, and it is exactly what it says it is — a pre-launch snapshot, not a performance record. We are not deleting it or quietly relabelling it because it is less flattering than the story.
What is true now. As of 5 August 2026, Hustl is live in public beta in Chennai, with activity concentrated in Avadi and Velachery. Signup is open to anyone 18 or over in India, and our team verifies every account and its documents manually before it goes live. Verified Partners post real shifts using free beta credits. Verified Hustlers book and complete those shifts. Attendance runs through the Partner's rotating QR at check-in and the Partner's rotating six-digit OTP at check-out. Once the shift is complete and the Hustler submits their rating, the pay goes to the UPI ID linked to their account. What we won't claim is volume or coverage: how many shifts are open near you on a given day varies, and the app is the only accurate view of that.
A retail store runs a busy floor, and busy floors have peaks: weekend rushes, sale periods, evening footfall. That's the classic case for flexible extra hands. You don't always need another permanent hire. You need a reliable person for a few hours when the floor is full. That gap, a short shift filled by someone nearby with an attendance record on both sides, is what Hustl is built for. What does a shop-floor helper actually do?
A shop-floor helper supports the retail team during open hours. The work is simple and ordinary: greeting shoppers as they come in, restocking shelves and rails, folding and arranging stock so displays stay neat, helping at the counter and the trial rooms, and giving the regular staff extra hands when the floor gets crowded on busy or sale hours.
Nothing about it is glamorous, and that's the point. It's the kind of work that keeps a store running smoothly, and it's the kind of work plenty of students and young people in Avadi and Velachery can do well with a little on-the-job guidance. You don't need a CV full of experience. You need to show up, be presentable, and be willing. Shift work on Hustl is open to adults aged 18 and over in India. How does a Hustler move through the shift on the app?
End to end, the journey is short and built to be obvious. Here is the flow exactly as it runs today — we're describing the mechanism rather than narrating one individual's shift, because we don't hold documented consent from the people who worked those first shifts to publish their story.
- Sign up and get verified. Free account with a phone OTP, then our team reviews the account and its documents by hand before it goes live. A person at Hustl actually looks at it. It is not external-provider KYC, and we're not going to call it that until a provider integration is actually live.
- See the shift. The Hustler opens the app and finds an open shop-helper shift near them, with the pay, timing, and location shown on the listing, no "apply now and find out later".
- Book it. They book the shift that fits their hours. What's open varies by day and area — the app is the only accurate view of that.
- Check in with the Partner's QR. On reaching the store, the Hustler scans the Partner's rotating QR code, which is what authorises the check-in. Where the device supplies location, the system also records it, including accuracy and distance from the shift location.
- Run the shift. They do the shop-floor work: greeting, restocking, folding, helping at the counter and trial rooms.
- Check out with the Partner's OTP. At the end, the Partner shares a rotating six-digit OTP, which the Hustler enters to close out the shift. Check-out may also record location or photo evidence.
- Get paid to UPI. Finish your shift, submit your rating, and get paid to your linked UPI ID within minutes.*
That's the loop. If a Partner or an admin has to step in — a QR that won't scan, an OTP that never gets shared, a shift closed out after the fact — that's a Partner override or an admin override, and it's recorded separately with different evidence than the QR and OTP paths. Why does an attendance record and a UPI payout matter here?
Because it turns a verbal promise into a written record. With a QR-authorised check-in and an OTP-authorised check-out, there's a timestamped account of when the work started and finished, agreed by both sides at the moment it happened, so nobody argues about it a week later. Then the pay goes to your linked UPI after the shift, instead of disappearing into a "we'll settle at month-end" black hole. No waiting for payday.
To be precise about what that record is and isn't: it is attendance evidence. It is not identity verification by an external provider, it is not a check on the business, and it is not a safety guarantee. It tells you the shift was worked. It doesn't tell you anything else.
For a young person doing their first shift, this is still the part that builds trust fast. You can see, in your own hands, that the work you did is logged and that the pay is tied to it. And because worker accounts have no joining fee, nobody is charging you for the privilege of being considered.

What does "no work is small" look like on a real shop floor?
It looks like an ordinary moment that we think shouldn't be ordinary at all: a young person walking into a store near home, folding shirts and greeting shoppers for a few hours, and leaving paid, with their head up. No apology, no embarrassment. Just honest work and honest pay.
There's a quiet taboo in India that treats service, retail, and manual work as somehow "low class", as if standing on a shop floor is beneath a student. Abroad, the same student waiting tables or working a till is completely normal, even respected. We started Hustl to chip away at that taboo, to make flexible, in-person earning a respected, everyday thing. That's the whole mission in one small picture. The work was small. The dignity wasn't. How honest should you be about early numbers?
Completely honest, which is why we won't quote you worker counts, fill rates, or coverage percentages as if they were measured current performance. The only dated numbers we hold from the pre-launch window are the 14-21 June 2026 extract described above, with its four-user, three-shift sample, its zero recorded payouts and its zero GPS check-in share. Those figures belong to that week and that sample. They are not a cap on anything that happened afterwards, and they are not evidence about August either.
What we'll stand behind is what we can describe exactly: the areas were Avadi and Velachery, the role was shop-floor helper, and the flow described above is the flow we run today, payout step included. We'd rather describe the mechanism precisely than inflate the numbers around it.
