Part-Time Jobs for ITI, Diploma and Polytechnic Students in Chennai

The short answer

If you are still enrolled in an ITI trade or a polytechnic diploma in Chennai, a registered apprenticeship is usually not available to you yet: the Directorate General of Training lists technician and graduate apprenticeships as post-qualification training of one year, and trade apprenticeship runs on a contract registered with an Apprenticeship Adviser rather than an informal side job. That leaves three realistic lanes while you study, which are ordinary hourly or shift work, paid skilled work in your trade, and course-linked internships. They differ sharply on schedule control, what proof of qualification you need, who pays for tools and protective gear, and whether the work leaves any record you can show later.

On this pageThe four lanes, side by side

Four different arrangements get called "part-time work" around Chennai's technical campuses, and they are not interchangeable. One of them, the registered apprenticeship, is probably not open to you at all while you are still enrolled.

Start there, because it is the assumption that wastes the most time. The Directorate General of Training, which sits under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, describes the period of post-qualification training for graduate, technician and technician (vocational) apprentices as one year on its apprenticeship training page. Post-qualification. If you are in the third semester of a mechanical diploma, that lane opens later, not now.

What is left is genuinely useful, and it splits three ways.

Everything in the right-hand column comes from the DGT page linked above. Everything in the first three columns is a description of how these arrangements are usually structured, not a rule. That distinction matters more than it sounds, and the rest of this page keeps them separate.

Two boundaries first. With no technical qualification yet, your entry question is covered by part-time jobs for 12th-pass freshers. For a list of which roles exist for students at all, read the student role guide. This page only sorts out which of the four arrangements is open to you while enrolled.

Why the apprenticeship column is stricter than people expect

An apprenticeship in India is not a generous internship. It is a statutory training relationship with paperwork.

The Apprentices Act, 1961 was amended in 1973, 1986 and 2014 to bring graduates, technicians, technician (vocational) and optional trade apprentices under its scope, so there are now five categories, not one. DGT states that every apprentice and employer has to enter into a contract of apprenticeship training, and that the contract is registered by the Apprenticeship Advisers. It also states that engaging apprentices is obligatory for employers with a manpower strength of 40 or more that have the required training infrastructure, in a band of 2.5 to 10 per cent of total manpower including contractual staff.

Stipend is set by formula. For trade apprentices, DGT lists the minimum as 70 per cent of the semi-skilled minimum wage notified by the relevant state or union territory in the first year, 80 per cent in the second, and 90 per cent in the third and fourth, with the employer bearing the cost. For graduate, technician and technician (vocational) apprentices the same page lists ₹4,984, ₹3,542 and ₹2,758 per month respectively, marked "with effect from 19th December, 2014", with that cost shared equally between the employer and the central government. Note the effective date printed on the page and treat the rupee figures as the published table rather than as this month's rate. For the trade-apprentice percentages, the rupee answer depends entirely on the current notified state wage, which is why the useful question to an establishment is not "how much" but "which notified semi-skilled wage are you calculating this from".

Monitoring is regional, and Chennai is one of the centres. DGT lists Regional Directorates of Apprenticeship Training at Chennai, Faridabad, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Kolkata and Mumbai, and Boards of Apprenticeship Training at Chennai, Kanpur, Kolkata and Mumbai for the graduate and technician categories. For the technician category after your diploma, Chennai is where that thread starts.

Hustl status, disclosed by the publisher

Hustl publishes this page and is an interested party. Hustl is live in public beta in Chennai: a hyperlocal marketplace for in-person shifts, with Avadi and Velachery as the current focus areas. Signup is open to anyone aged 18 or over in India, with no joining fee. Our team verifies every account and its documents manually, which means a person at Hustl reads them, not an external verification provider. Verified businesses post real shifts, and during the beta they post them using free beta credits. You check in by scanning the Partner's rotating QR code, with location recorded when available, and check out with the Partner's rotating six-digit OTP. Finish the shift, submit your rating, and you are paid to your linked UPI ID within minutes.* Partner and admin overrides are recorded separately and carry different evidence. The web apps at app.hustl.today and partner.hustl.today are the current surfaces, and native iOS and Android apps arrive with our first stable release.

Read the scope carefully on this page in particular: Hustl shifts are general in-person shifts. The skilled-trade, internship and apprenticeship lanes described here are not Hustl inventory, and nothing here should be read as Hustl offering fitter, electrician, welder, draughtsman or any other trade work. Availability varies and may be empty on any given day. Hustlers are independent contractors, 18 or over, in India only.

What your certificate actually proves, and to whom

The Craftsmen Training Scheme that runs the ITI system was introduced in 1950, and DGT's CTS page records 14,643 ITIs across the country, 3,331 government and 11,312 private, with 26.58 lakh trainees enrolled on the NCVT MIS portal across 169 NSQF-compliant trades of one-year and two-year duration. Day-to-day administration and admissions sit with state governments; standards, examinations and certification sit with the centre.

That split explains a small thing that trips people up. Your admission is a Tamil Nadu matter. Your certificate is a national one. When a workshop asks what trade you are in, they are asking about a nationally standardised syllabus, and the curriculum, question banks and mock tests for it are published openly on DGT's Bharat Skills repository. You can look up exactly what your own trade is supposed to have covered by now, which is a reasonable way to decide whether you are ready to be paid for a task or still need supervision.

For the apprenticeship route specifically, DGT states that All India Trade Tests for trade apprentices are conducted by the National Council of Vocational Training twice a year, in October or November and in April or May, and that National Apprenticeship Certificates are awarded to those who pass and are recognised for employment under government and semi-government departments and organisations. That is the certification the apprenticeship column produces. Ordinary shift work produces none of it.

Before you accept skilled work off the books

Use this as a short pre-agreement checklist rather than a rule about what is legal, because the answers vary by workshop and none of them is settled by this article.

  • Ask what exactly you are expected to do without supervision, and compare it against your trade's published curriculum on Bharat Skills.
  • Ask who supplies tools and protective equipment, and who replaces them if something breaks.
  • Ask how pay is calculated, per day or per job, and when it is paid.
  • Ask whether you are being engaged as a trainee, a helper, a contractor or something unnamed. If nobody can answer, that is your answer about how the arrangement will be handled later.
  • Ask who is accountable if you are injured. Do not accept "we will see" on this one.
  • Check any listing or recruiter against a route you control. The Ministry of Labour and Employment runs National Career Service with free jobseeker registration, career centres, and a toll-free helpline on 1514.
  • Never pay an individual recruiter into a personal account for access to work.

How to read a listing that asks for ITI, diploma or polytechnic

This page will not tell you what Chennai workshops are advertising this month, because any list printed here would be out of date before you read it and a stale list is worse than none. What does not go out of date is how to read the ones you find yourself.

Four things about the language first.

"ITI preferred" and "ITI required" are different filters. Preferred means the qualification moves you up a pile that also contains people without it, and the rate is often set for the pile rather than for you. Required means the trade certificate is the gate, and it is fair to expect the pay to reflect that. If an advertisement says preferred and then quotes trade-level responsibilities, ask which one it actually is before you spend a bus fare on the interview.

A named trade is a real filter; a named machine is a sharper one. "Diploma holders" is a category. "Fitter, capable on a lathe unsupervised" is a task description, and it tells you whether you will be doing your trade or standing next to someone doing it. The second kind of wording is more useful to you, even when it sounds harder.

"Apprentice" in a classified advertisement does not mean a registered apprenticeship. The word is used loosely to mean junior, trainee or cheap. The registered version has the contract, the Apprenticeship Adviser, the stipend rule and the certificate described above. If a listing uses the word, the single question that settles it is whether the contract of apprenticeship will be registered, and with whom. A vague answer means it is ordinary work with a flattering job title.

"Immediate joining" is a freshness signal, not an offer. It usually means the listing was written when a gap opened. Treat anything with that phrase as valid for about a week, and re-confirm before you travel.

Then look for what is missing, because that is where the disagreements come from later. Most short listings leave out hours per week, whether the hours are fixed or called at short notice, who supplies tools and protective equipment, whether pay is per day or per job, who supervises you, and when payment actually lands. None of those omissions makes a listing dishonest. All of them are yours to close before you agree.

A worksheet you can fill in from your own search is more useful than someone else's sample. For every listing you are seriously considering, write down six lines:

LineWhat to recordWhat to ask if it is blank
WhoThe employer or recruiter, and the surface you found them on"Which company is this for?" A recruiter who will not name the establishment is not ready for your decision
WhereThe exact area, not the district"Which street or landmark?" Then check the return journey, not just the outbound one
WhatThe tasks, in your own words"What will I be doing without supervision?"
WhenDays, hours per shift, fixed or on call"How much notice do I get before a shift?"
Pay basisPer hour, per shift, per day or per job, and the payment date"When exactly does it get paid, and how?"
KitWho supplies tools and protective gear, and who replaces breakages"Am I expected to bring anything?"

Two of those lines carry a decision on their own. If the pay basis and the payment date cannot both be stated plainly, the arrangement is not ready to be agreed. If nobody will say who supplies protective equipment for workshop work, that is an answer.

One limit worth holding on to whichever route you use: an advertisement proves only its own displayed language. It does not prove that a vacancy is open, that the recruiter is genuine, that anyone was hired, or that anyone was actually paid the amount displayed.

Fitting work around a workshop timetable

Lab and workshop hours are the constraint that makes technical-course scheduling different from a general degree. A missed theory lecture can be borrowed from a friend's notes. A missed workshop slot usually cannot.

Work the arithmetic yourself rather than accepting anyone else's monthly figure. The following is a hypothetical worked example using inputs you supply, not observed market data:

  1. Write down your fixed hours for one week: classes, workshop or lab slots, and any practical assessment blocks.
  2. Subtract commute, both directions, at its real length. If you are travelling from Avadi to a workshop near Ambattur, the return leg after 8 pm is a different journey from the morning one, and the Avadi college-area guide goes into that corridor in more detail.
  3. Subtract the recovery you actually need after a practical day. Standing at a bench for six hours is tiring, and pretending otherwise is how people drop a course.
  4. What remains is your real availability. Multiply it by whatever hourly or per-shift figure you have been offered in writing, not by any figure you read online.
  5. Subtract travel cost and food for those hours.

Whatever number falls out is yours and is not transferable to anyone else. It also changes every semester, so redo it rather than reusing last term's answer.

Which lane leaves a record

If you take only one thing from the four-lane table, take this: three of the lanes pay you and one of them also certifies you, and only you can decide which you need more this year.

The apprenticeship lane certifies. DGT's National Apprenticeship Certificate is the artefact. It is also the slowest lane, it has a contract, and for the technician and graduate categories it waits until after your qualification.

Skilled work in your trade builds real competence and records none of it. If you choose this lane, keep your own dated log of what you worked on and which machines you used. Nobody else will.

Money now against a record later is the same trade-off behind gig work versus a full-time job for students, and where certification and platform work sit relative to each other in India is the subject of the future-of-work piece.

Ordinary shift work is the fastest to start and the most honest about what it is: it pays for hours. If that is what this semester needs, take it without pretending it is career development. Separately, if you do end up in platform or gig work, the Ministry of Labour and Employment's e-Shram portal is the government's registration route for unorganised workers and now carries a platform-worker registration path; its helpdesk numbers are 14434 and 1800 889 6811.

And if a general in-person shift is the lane you want this month, Hustl is live in public beta on the web at app.hustl.today. Check it the day you plan to work rather than the day you read this, because what is open near you varies day to day, and none of it is trade work.

* Hustl is in public beta and the payment gateway is not integrated yet, so each payout is released by our team rather than automatically. It is usually under 2 minutes, typically 2-5 minutes, and no more than 10 minutes after you complete your shift and submit your rating.

Frequently asked questions

Is an apprenticeship the same as a part-time job?

No. Under the Apprentices Act, 1961 framework described by the Directorate General of Training, every apprentice and employer enters a contract of apprenticeship training that an Apprenticeship Adviser registers, the stipend minimum is set by rule rather than negotiated hourly, and trade apprenticeship training runs from one year and two months to two years. An ordinary part-time shift has none of that structure.

Can I do a technician apprenticeship while I am still in my polytechnic diploma?

The Directorate General of Training describes the period of post-qualification training for graduate, technician and technician (vocational) apprentices as one year, which places that category after you finish the qualification, not alongside it. Confirm your own case with your institution and the Board of Apprenticeship Training at Chennai before planning around it.

What stipend does a trade apprentice get?

The Directorate General of Training sets the minimum as a percentage of the semi-skilled minimum wage notified by the relevant state or union territory: 70 per cent in the first year, 80 per cent in the second, and 90 per cent in the third and fourth. The percentage is the rule; the rupee figure depends on the current notified state wage, so ask the establishment which notification they applied.

Does part-time shift work help my ITI or diploma career?

Not in the way a National Apprenticeship Certificate does. The Directorate General of Training states that the NAC is awarded to those who pass the All India Trade Test and is recognised for employment under government and semi-government departments. Ordinary shift work pays you now and leaves no trade certification behind, which is a fair trade only if you have decided it is one.
