Before a Cafe Trial Shift: Questions to Ask

The short answer

Ask what the cafe trial involves, who will supervise it, when it ends and what payment is agreed. A short trial still needs a clear brief.

On this pageA message to adapt

Before a cafe trial shift, get the trial itself described. A chat with the manager, a supervised practice task and serving customers for an evening are different commitments.

The word “trial” leaves too much open.

Start with the work: will you shadow someone, take orders, clear tables, wash equipment or prepare drinks? Then confirm the date, reporting time, finish time, supervisor and whether payment is offered. If it is, ask what amount or basis applies and when it will be paid. Don't infer an agreement from a possible future job.

A message to adapt

Thanks for inviting me for a trial. Before I come, could you confirm the duration, tasks, supervisor and payment arrangement? Please also tell me the clothing requirements and whether I need to bring anything.

Ask whether any induction happens before the stated start. Tell the manager if your return journey gives you a firm finishing limit.

Food work also needs instruction. FSSAI's food-handler booklet covers personal hygiene, handling and cleaning. A beginner should ask where the cafe's procedures are explained and who checks the first attempt.

At the counter

Use a simple boundary: “I haven't used this equipment before. Could someone demonstrate and supervise me?”

That sentence fits a coffee machine, cleaning chemical or till system. It does not require a speech about your experience. Don't handle unfamiliar equipment just because the queue is growing, and don't guess about ingredients when a customer asks.

Our beginner cafe role guide explains the wider range of tasks. This trial checklist helps you establish the particular arrangement.

At the end, ask who will contact you and whether there is a decision date. Note the tasks completed and any payment confirmation privately. Avoid recording customers or taking photographs inside the workplace without permission.

At Hustl, we want ordinary service work to be treated with respect. A beginner asking for a clear brief belongs in that picture.
