Write a specific fault. “Old” is an age description; “cannot run the required application” is a problem to solve.
For serviceable devices, get a qualified assessment and a current quote. Apple's battery-service page is an example of a model-specific service route. It does not mean that every old device is worth repairing.
Check what the course actually needs
Ask for the software names and versions before buying a replacement. Autodesk's requirements directory illustrates how requirements depend on the product and version. Confirm the equivalent details for your own course.
Borrow with a handover
If you borrow equipment, agree when you can use it and how you will return it. Keep your files organised so the next person does not inherit your project mess. Confirm college-lab access instead of assuming a seat will always be available.
Buy the missing capability when you have identified it. Leave optional upgrades in a separate list, where you can consider them without confusing them with immediate needs.
