Before recording a college event, free space deliberately. The worst time to discover that your phone is full is halfway through the one moment you cannot repeat.
Begin with the storage screen. Apple's storage guide distinguishes device space from iCloud storage and describes optimisation options. Buying cloud capacity is not the same as increasing your phone's physical storage.
Sort by purpose
Try three folders or album labels: current project, finished work, and personal memories. Keep the current project's source clips until you are satisfied with the edit and have made another usable copy. A compressed video sent in a chat may not replace the original you wanted.
For each large file, ask one question: “What would I lose if this disappeared?” A downloaded film you can access again is a different decision from your only recording of a friend's performance.
Avoid starting with a mass delete.
Verify before removing
Copy important originals to a separate destination you control. Open a few files there, check they play fully, and confirm that the copy is independent of the library you are clearing.
This matters with photo sync. Apple explains that deleting an item in iCloud Photos deletes it across devices using that library. Seeing the same photograph on another device is not proof that you have a separate backup.
Free space in small steps
Delete small groups you have checked, then revisit available storage. Leave enough working room to record, edit and export; your next project may temporarily need both source clips and a finished version.
