Class 10 is a filing line, not a skill line.
If you are 18 or over in Chennai and you stopped studying after tenth standard, your marksheet is rarely the thing that decides whether you get the shift. What decides it is narrower and more physical: whether you can read a number off a packing label without slowing the line, whether the name on your bank record matches the name on your ID, and whether you can actually stand through the hours you agreed to. Employers screen for those separately, and they screen for them later than you think.
Everything below is written for adults aged 18 and over, working in India. If you are still in school, jump to the section on the education track and stop there.
"10th pass" is doing four different jobs in one line of text
The phrase looks like one requirement. It can be doing any of four different jobs, and working out which one you are facing changes how you respond.
It can be an HR form field. Some employers, especially anyone routing you through a contractor or an agency, need a completed-education value to open a file. Nobody reads it after that.
It can be shorthand for literacy and numeracy on task. The supervisor is not asking about your science marks. They are asking whether you can read a bill, count to forty in a hurry, and write a legible entry in a register.
It can be a sorting filter. When a listing draws more callers than anyone intends to speak to, "10th pass" is a line a recruiter can cut the pile with without thinking about it. This is the version that feels unfair, because it is.
And sometimes it is residue. Listings get copied between roles, and an education line survives from a job that had nothing to do with this one.
You cannot tell which from the ad. You can usually tell within two questions on the phone: ask what the person did in this role last month, and ask whether the marksheet has to be produced on day one or ever.
Age and education are two separate gates, and they close at different heights
This is the part people conflate, and it is worth separating carefully, because the two gates belong to different systems and different owners.
Education is a threshold an employer or a platform sets for itself. Age is set elsewhere, and different official systems draw the line in different places for different purposes. The government's e-Shram registry for unorganised workers states that "Any worker who is unorganised and aged between 16-59 years, is eligible to register on the e-Shram portal subject to fulfilling of other criteria". The same FAQ defines an unorganised worker as someone "not a member of ESIC or EPFO", and adds that the worker "should not be an income tax payee" (e-Shram FAQs, Ministry of Labour and Employment). Aadhaar sits lower still: UIDAI states that "Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident of India, may voluntarily enrol to obtain Aadhaar number" (UIDAI, About Your Aadhaar).
So holding an Aadhaar number, or being able to register somewhere, is not the same as being eligible for a given job or a given platform. Each one has its own floor. Turning 18 also changes something no platform controls: the Tamil Nadu shop-hours restrictions written for young persons stop applying to you, and the adult daily and weekly hour limits take their place.
If you are under 18, this page has nothing for you and is not trying to find you work. Talk to your school headmaster or your college office first. If you have already left school, the two doors that stay open are the state open-university and open-school route, and the free government career service described further down. Neither of them asks you to pay anyone to look at your file.
What gets tested in the first hour on the floor
Nobody asks about class 10 once the shift starts. What replaces it:
Numbers under time pressure. Reading a quantity, a price, a bin code, a size label, and not transposing the digits when three customers are waiting. Whatever your marksheet says, this is the part that has to hold, and it has nothing to do with formal education.
A spoken instruction, once. Usually in Tamil, sometimes half in English, sometimes across a noisy floor. Whether you ask a clarifying question rather than guessing tells the supervisor more than any certificate.
Standing time. Six hours on a hard floor is tiring, and it is a real requirement, not a soft one. If a listing says four hours and the venue is a supermarket on a Saturday, assume the busy stretch is continuous.
Cash and trust boundaries. Some roles put money in your hands on day one. Others deliberately do not, and that is a role design decision rather than a judgement about you.

Six requirements, sorted before you spend bus fare
The table below is not a survey of Chennai listings and nobody has counted them on your behalf. It is a worksheet. Take one specific offer you are actually considering, run it down the six rows, and fill the middle two columns from your own phone call. The value is in the answers you collect, not in the rows themselves.
Split every offer into these six, because they are checked by different people at different moments, and a mismatch in any one of them is what wastes your trip.

Two things vary so much between employers that no general guide can settle them for you, and both are worth pinning down before you accept rather than after. The first is whether the education line is enforced at all, which depends on whether a contractor, an agency or the venue itself opens your file. The second is what the equipment row actually costs you, because footwear, a uniform or a data plan can be presented as a detail and then turn out to be the difference between the shift being worth taking and not.
Run those six against the offer, not against the job title. Two listings can carry the identical words "packing helper", one in Ambattur and one in Velachery, and still not describe the same day of work. If the person on the phone cannot answer four of the six, that is itself information, and it usually means they are recruiting for someone else and have not seen the floor.
Documents: what is normal, what is unusual, and what should stop you
"No resume needed" and "no identity check" are not the same sentence. Almost every legitimate arrangement, employment or contract, ends with someone recording who you are so they can pay you. That is ordinary.
What Aadhaar does and does not do is worth being precise about, because a lot of noise around entry-level hiring depends on people not knowing. UIDAI's own wording is that "The Aadhaar number is a proof of identity, however, it does not confer any right of citizenship or domicile in respect of an Aadhaar number holder" (UIDAI). It proves who you are. It says nothing about what you studied, and no employer can read your education from it.
If you want a government-side record of yourself as an unorganised worker, e-Shram is the portal for it, and its stated requirements are an Aadhaar number and an Aadhaar-linked mobile number, with Common Service Centre biometric registration available if your mobile is not linked (e-Shram FAQs). Read the eligibility conditions there yourself rather than taking a middleman's summary of them.
On the fee question, there is a distinction worth holding onto. A government employment service does not charge you. The National Career Service states plainly that "NCS services are free of cost. NCS does not charge any fee at any stage of registration, job application, interview processing and other employment related services", and publishes a toll-free helpline on 1514 (National Career Service, Ministry of Labour and Employment). Separately, some independent platform-partner models do publish official onboarding, kit, deposit or rental terms, and those are a different thing from an employer selling access to a job. Check the amount, the refund position, and above all the recipient against the platform's own official page. A request to transfer money to a recruiter's personal account is a serious warning signal in every version of this.

Finishing school later is a separate track, and it stays open
Two things can be true at once: you can work now, and you can finish schooling later. In Tamil Nadu the distance route is not obscure. Tamil Nadu Open University describes itself as "a State Open University established by the Tamil Nadu Government", recognised by UGC-DEB, with a stated commitment to reach learners "irrespective of caste, creed, religion, age, profession and habitat" and at what it calls an affordable cost (TNOU). Check the current prospectus for the specific programme, because eligibility differs by programme and the homepage does not state it.
On the skills side, the National Skill Development Corporation describes itself on its own site as established in 2008 as a Public-Private Partnership under the aegis of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and lists PMKVY among its schemes (NSDC). Its homepage does not publish a single entry qualification or a single fee position, so the only reliable move is to open the specific course page and read that scheme's terms before enrolling.
A small aside, worth about what an aside is worth: near a bus terminus you will see posters for training courses and posters for jobs, and the two are paid for by people who want different things from you. One wants an enrolment. The other wants a worker. That tells you nothing about the quality of either, only about who is paying for the phone number.

Work down this list on the phone, in this order, and you will lose fewer days to trips that were never going to work.
- Ask what the person in this role did during a normal shift last week, hour by hour.
- Ask whether the education requirement is checked on day one, later, or never.
- Ask the stated minimum age and whether ID is checked at the gate.
- Ask which exact documents to bring, in whose name, and whether originals are seen or copies retained.
- Ask what you must bring or wear, and who pays for it.
- Ask whether they have taken anyone with no prior experience in the last month.
- Ask what the pay is per hour or per shift, when it is paid, and by which method. Get the answer before you agree, not after.
- If any money is requested from you at any point, stop and check it against the organisation's own official page, and never send it to an individual's personal account.
