Documents Needed for a Part-Time Job in Chennai, and What Not to Share
For a part-time job in Chennai you will normally be asked for an identity proof, a way to pay you such as a UPI ID or an account number with IFSC, and, only where the role legally requires one, a licence or a qualification certificate. That short list is not the interesting part. The timing is.
An identity proof requested after you have met someone at a real address and received a written offer with role, hours and pay is an ordinary onboarding step. The identical request arriving in the first message, before anyone has told you the shop's name, is a different event wearing the same clothes. So the rule this page runs on: judge the stage, not the document.
This is written for adults, since public work opportunities on Hustl and on most Indian platforms are 18+ and India-only. It is general guidance for Chennai and Tamil Nadu, not legal or tax advice, and it never asks you to upload a real ID anywhere.
The stage ladder
Read down the left column until you find where you actually are in the process. Anything to the right of your current stage can wait.
| Where you are | Reasonable to give | Not yet | Safer form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replying to a poster, a board listing, or a forwarded message | Your name, a contact number, the area you can travel to, your free hours | Any ID number, any document photo, bank details, your exact house address | Plain text. Nothing attached |
| Screening call or chat with the employer | Confirmation that you are 18 or over, languages you speak, experience, availability. Plus the questions you ask them | Aadhaar, PAN, certificates, bank details | Still nothing attached |
| In person at the stated address, or a documented onboarding inside an official app or portal | Identity proof; qualification proof if the role genuinely needs it | Originals handed over for them to keep | Masked e-Aadhaar or offline e-KYC file. Show originals, leave copies |
| After a written offer naming role, address, hours, total pay and payment date | A payment destination: UPI ID, or account number and IFSC | A PIN, an OTP, a card number, a banking password | The employer's own stated payroll channel |
| Only where the law requires it for that role | Driving licence, or a role-specific credential | Anything unrelated to that licence | Details verified against the official portal, not a photo of a photo |
The ladder is doing one job: it separates "this person wants to hire me" from "this person wants my file". A small business in Velachery or Avadi hiring two weekend hands has no use for your Aadhaar at 9pm on Tuesday before they have even told you what the work is.
Document by document, and the smaller version of each
| Document | Who legitimately needs it, and when | Officially smaller version | What you can do if it leaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar | An employer or platform confirming identity, at onboarding | Masked e-Aadhaar, Virtual ID, or Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC | Check your authentication history, then lock your Aadhaar. Both are UIDAI services |
| PAN | The party paying you, where tax deduction or reporting applies | None. Give it only at payment setup | Contact the Income Tax Department through its e-filing portal |
| Bank account or UPI ID | Whoever is actually sending your pay, after an offer exists | A UPI ID rather than full account details, where the payer accepts it | Tell your bank. A destination is not a credential, but stop further sharing |
| Driving licence | Roles that legally require driving; verified via the transport portal | Licence number for verification rather than a full scan | Report through the transport department's own channels |
| Education or trade certificates | Roles with a stated qualification requirement | Photocopy or self-attested copy. Originals stay with you | Reissue is slow and expensive, which is why originals never leave your hand |
| Photograph | ID card or roster at onboarding | A plain passport-style photo, not a selfie holding your Aadhaar | Little recourse. Prevention is the whole strategy |
| Phone number | Everyone, from the first message | Nothing smaller exists | Block and report. Never forward an OTP that arrives afterwards |
Two rows deserve a paragraph.
Originals. Carry them, show them, take them back. We think there is almost never a defensible reason for a part-time employer to retain your original marksheet or licence, and the burden of recovering it lands entirely on you.
Bank details. To send you money, someone needs a destination: a UPI ID, or an account number with IFSC. A PIN, an OTP, a card number and a net-banking password are credentials, and credentials are not a payment destination. If anyone hiring you tells you to open your UPI app and approve something, read the exact wording on the approval screen first, and check your own bank's or UPI app's official help page before you tap anything.
Aadhaar's official routes to sharing less
This is the part most listicles skip, and it is the part that actually reduces your exposure. Four of them are UIDAI's own services, listed together under Aadhaar Online Services in UIDAI's FAQ index, not workarounds invented by a blog.
Masked e-Aadhaar. The masked version of the downloaded e-Aadhaar replaces the first eight digits of the Aadhaar number with x characters and leaves only the last four visible. For an employer who wants to see a name, photo and date of birth attached to a government document, that is often enough.
Virtual ID. UIDAI defines it as "a temporary, revocable 16-digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number," usable in place of the Aadhaar number wherever authentication or e-KYC is performed, with no way to derive the Aadhaar number back from it. You generate it yourself from UIDAI's myAadhaar portal, the Aadhaar app, or by SMS to 1947, and only one VID is valid at a time (UIDAI Virtual ID FAQ).
Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC. A digitally signed file you download yourself and hand over, so a business can verify your identity details without collecting or storing your Aadhaar number.
Aadhaar lock. UIDAI's lock service stops authentication running against your Aadhaar until you unlock it again, and the separate biometric lock does the same for biometric modalities. Both sit alongside VID generation and e-Aadhaar download on the myAadhaar services reachable from uidai.gov.in, which also publishes the 1947 helpline.
One practical warning. UIDAI has been reorganising its website, and several older deep links into individual FAQ pages now return errors, including ones still printed in other people's articles. Start from the FAQ index or the UIDAI homepage above rather than from a link someone forwarded you, and never from a link inside a job message.
An aside that helps nobody in particular: "Adhar", "Adhaar" and "Aadar" all turn up in job messages. Bad spelling is not a fraud signal and good spelling is not a clearance. The address is what you check.
Five questions before anything leaves your phone
Copy these into your notes app. Run them every time, including for the offer that looks fine.
- Who exactly is asking? Business name, your contact's name, and their role at that business. "HR team" is not a name.
- Where is the business? A street address you could reach by bus, not "Chennai" and not a landmark.
- Where else does this request appear? An official careers page, a portal, or an app screen. If the only place this request exists is a chat thread, that is your answer.
- Why this document, for this role, at this stage? A cafe counter job does not need your driving licence. A weekend stall does not need your PAN before an offer.
- Where does any money move? Nothing should be payable by you to a personal account, a UPI handle belonging to an individual recruiter, or a "registration" collection. Where a legitimate independent partner model does charge for onboarding, kit, deposit or rental, those terms will be published on the company's own official page and the payment will go to the company, not to a person. The registration-fee red flags list and the starting costs of delivery partner onboarding go deeper on that distinction.
If a request fails two or more of those, stop and verify before you continue. Verifying costs a phone call. Un-sending a document costs you the rest of the year.
Reading the document line in a listing
Job ads in Chennai state their document requirements in a small number of recurring shapes, and each shape tells you something different. What follows is how to read them, not a claim about how common any of them are.
- "Aadhaar mandatory" or "ID proof must". This tells you a document is wanted. It does not tell you when, by whom, or through what channel, which are the three things that matter. Ask all three before you reply with anything.
- "Documents will be collected at the time of joining". The most ordinary phrasing there is. It places the collection at a time and, implicitly, a place. Confirm the place.
- "Send Aadhaar and photo to confirm your slot". The chat thread has become the collection point and a slot has been invented to create urgency. There is nothing to confirm, because nothing has been offered.
- "Immediate joining" plus a document request in the same message. Treat the two as one signal rather than two. Ask for the address first and see whether the urgency survives.
- "Bank details required for salary account". Reasonable after an offer, premature before one. There is no salary account to set up while the role, hours, pay and payment date are still unnamed.
- No mention of documents at all. Common, and not reassuring by itself. Ask what will be needed before you spend an hour and a bus fare getting there.
If you want to do this properly, open a note and fill one row per listing you are actually considering. You will learn more from six of your own rows than from any generic list, because you are sampling the employers who might realistically hire you.
| Listing | Business named? | Exact address given? | Documents named | Stage stated | Channel stated | Any fee or deposit mentioned | Your verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The columns that most often stay empty are the useful finding. A listing that names a business, an address, a stage and an in-person channel has told you where you stand. One that names only a document and a phone number has told you that too.
What varies genuinely between employers: whether copies are taken at all, whether onboarding happens in person or inside an app, which qualification proofs a role actually needs, and how pay is set up. What does not vary: an advertisement proves only what it says, never that a vacancy is open or that a recruiter is trustworthy.
Where Hustl sits in all this
Hustl publishes this page and is an interested party. We run a hyperlocal marketplace for in-person shifts, live in public beta in Chennai, with activity concentrated around Avadi and Velachery. This page is about the Chennai job market in general, not a description of shifts we have open today.
Worker and business signup are open to anyone 18 or over in India. Our own team reviews every account and its documents by hand before it goes live, which is what we mean when we say a Hustler or a Partner is verified. A person reads it. We do not use an outside verification provider, and nothing on Hustl runs an automated identity check against any government database. Verified Partners post real shifts, using free beta credits during the beta.
On a shift you check in by scanning the Partner's rotating QR code, with location recorded when your device supplies it, and you check out with the Partner's rotating six-digit OTP. Once the shift is complete and you have submitted your rating, your pay goes to your linked UPI ID within minutes.* That is why the UPI ID matters to us and the UPI PIN never does. The same five questions above apply to us. If a request that claims to come from Hustl does not survive them, write to support@hustl.today, which is our only publicly verified mailbox.

If you have already sent it
You are not the first person to send an Aadhaar photo to a number that later went quiet. Do these in order.
- Check what your Aadhaar has been used for. UIDAI's Aadhaar Authentication History service shows the authentications performed against your number, including the method, the date and time, the requesting agency and whether it succeeded. Read the agency names. You will recognise your bank and your SIM; anything you do not recognise is worth escalating through UIDAI, whose helpline is 1947.
- Lock it. Generate a Virtual ID, then use UIDAI's lock service so no authentication can run against your Aadhaar until you unlock it. Both controls are reachable from uidai.gov.in.
- If money moved, or someone is impersonating you, file on the Government of India's National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Confirm the current financial-fraud helpline number from the portal itself before dialling anything a stranger gives you.
- If it was a PAN issue, go through the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal, which also runs Instant e-PAN, Link Aadhaar and Verify PAN Status, rather than through any third party offering to "fix" it for a fee.
- If a driving licence was involved, the Sarathi driving licence service run under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is the official route, not a broker outside the RTO.
Then go back to the stage ladder. The next employer gets your name and your free hours, and nothing else until they have given you an address.
* Hustl is in public beta and the payment gateway is not integrated yet, so each payout is released by our team rather than automatically. It is usually under 2 minutes, typically 2-5 minutes, and no more than 10 minutes after you complete your shift and submit your rating.
